CTA-Goodman Gators
Sock Hop – The school’s 18th Annual Sock Hop will be held during regular school hours on Fri., March 2. Admission this year will be a can of food or other nonperishable food item, which will be donated to the United Food Bank. Students should dress in 1950s-style clothes for the day; parents are invited to attend and bring cameras.

Jeans for Teens – The Go-Getters are happy to announce over 200 pairs of jeans were collected during the recent Jeans for Teens drive. The jeans will be donated to homeless teens via charity organizations throughout the U.S. Ms. Anna Pfau’s class brought in the most with 107 pairs, and will receive a class party sponsored by Aeropostale.

Make that change – CTA-Goodman Student Council raised $891.95 during its recent change drive on behalf of the Special Olympics. Thanks to the community for its support.

Sum total – The second-quarter pop tabs collection drive was a great success, with 56,250 pop tabs collected. The school will be collecting pop tabs all year. Thanks to all for the support of the Ronald McDonald House.

Save the date – A PTO meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tue., Feb. 21 in the library. All parents are encouraged to participate.

Fundraising fun – Box Tops, Juice Pouches and Labels for Education are being collected. They will be turned into cash for the school.

Tax credit – Donate to the school through the Arizona Tax Credit program. Up to $400 per married couple or $200 per single can be donated. Full donations are returned via tax credit.

Seton Catholic Prep Sentinels
Partner up – Seton Catholic Prep has joined its fellow diocesan Catholic high schools in membership to the Canyon Christian Schools Consortium, a partnership with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Seton’s students and alumni will now have the opportunity to receive a $2,500 or $5,000 scholarship at GCU per year for each year of attendance at Seton, adding up to a potential savings of up to $20,000 on college tuition over the course of four years. Parents of Seton students and current faculty and staff members are eligible for a 15 percent discount on tuition for online undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree programs at GCU, with scholarships available for campus-based programs. GCU will also provide preferential employment consideration to Seton and other CCSC member-school parents and alumni. For more information, visit www.gcu.edu/ccsc.

Youth Chronicles

Madison Esteves, a junior at Hamilton High School in Chandler, won a $1,500 scholarship and was named Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen, qualifying her to represent the state at the upcoming Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in August in Orlando, FL. The pageant contestants were judged on a media-style interview, evening wear, fitness, talent, academic achievement and service platform. Esteves’ service platform is Best Buddies, one-on-one peer mentoring of teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Michelle M. McCorkle of Sun Lakes has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester of the 2011-12 academic year at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. To qualify, a student must earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale while taking at least 12 credit hours of coursework.

Rebekah Kurtz of Chandler has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester of the 2011-12 academic year at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA. A grade point average of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale is required for the designation.

Ashlee Brown of Chandler, a senior forward at Utah State University in Logan, UT, recently led her team to a pair of road wins at San Jose State and at Hawaii. For the week, Ashlee averaged 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocks while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 65.5 percent at the free throw line.

Evan Sarver and Garret Kaiser of Chandler are among the Valley of the Sun Chapter of National Football Foundation’s 2012 Class Top 50 Scholar Athletes. Evan also receives All-Arizona accolades, and Garret is honored with the Shaw Courage Award and Scholarship for his hard work and dedication rehabilitating from a potentially football career-ending back injury. The athletes will be honored at the 31st Annual Chapter Awards Banquet held March 3 at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort.
